The Water Disappears. The Salt Doesn't.
Pull a boat out of saltwater and let it dry. The surface may look dry, but that does not mean it is clean. Saltwater contains dissolved salts and minerals. As water evaporates, material can remain on gelcoat, glass, stainless steel, vinyl, hardware, engines, and other exposed surfaces.
Why a Quick Rinse Helps
Freshwater rinsing helps dissolve and carry away salt left on exposed surfaces. The sooner it happens after saltwater use, the easier routine maintenance generally becomes.

When Freshwater Isn't Enough
If the boat has been repeatedly exposed, allowed to dry, or accumulated other contamination along with salt, a proper wash may be necessary. Use a marine wash at the recommended concentration and mechanically clean with appropriate wash media. The objective is not to overpower the salt with stronger chemistry; it is to remove the contamination completely.
Don't Confuse Salt With Water Spots
Salt residue and hard-water mineral spotting can look similar, but they are not necessarily the same problem. If normal washing removes the residue, you solved a cleaning problem. If distinct mineral deposits remain, you may be dealing with water spotting that needs a different approach.

Stainless
Rails, hinges, fasteners, rod holders, cleats, and hardware see constant salt exposure.
Engines
Outboard cowlings and transom areas receive spray throughout the day.
Glass
Salt film can reduce clarity and leave visible residue.
Under Cushions
Spray travels farther than expected and can collect in hidden areas.

If the trailer was submerged in saltwater, it deserves attention too.
