What Is pH—and Why Does It Matter When Cleaning a Boat?

pH Is Useful. It Is Not a Complete Safety or Strength Rating.
Cleaner labels often use terms like pH-neutral, acidic or alkaline. Those words matter, but pH alone does not tell you everything about cleaning power, surface compatibility or hazard. It is one part of the formulation and one part of choosing the right chemistry.
The pH Scale
For aqueous solutions, the familiar pH scale runs from 0 to 14. A pH of 7 is neutral, values below 7 are acidic, and values above 7 are alkaline or basic. The scale is logarithmic, so a one-unit change represents a tenfold change in hydrogen-ion activity under the standard definition.
Why Cleaners Use Different pH Ranges
Different soils respond to different chemistry. Acidic cleaners are often used for certain mineral deposits, rust-type staining and scale. Alkaline cleaners are commonly used against oils, grease and organic grime. Routine marine soaps are often formulated closer to neutral because they are intended for frequent cleaning without unnecessarily attacking existing protection.
pH Does Not Tell the Whole Story
Two products with similar pH values can behave differently because surfactants, solvents, chelating agents, acids, builders, inhibitors and other ingredients change how a formula works. Concentration, dwell time, temperature and the surface itself also matter.
Concentrate vs. Use Dilution
The pH of a concentrate is not automatically the same as the pH of its diluted working solution. Follow the manufacturer's dilution directions rather than improvising based on a pH number.
Why This Matters on a Boat
A boat combines gelcoat, painted surfaces, metals, vinyl, plastics, canvas, rubber and coatings. A cleaner that is effective on one problem can be inappropriate on another material. Surface compatibility and product directions come before a simple "acid vs. alkaline" shortcut.
pH helps you understand the chemistry. The label, dilution and surface tell you whether that chemistry belongs on the job.
