A Ratio Is Simple Once You Know What the Numbers Represent
A dilution such as 10:1 normally means ten parts water to one part concentrate when the manufacturer uses a water:product convention. But labels are not universally written the same way, so verify the product's directions before assuming which side represents the concentrate.
Think in Total Parts
For a 10:1 water-to-product mixture, there are 11 total parts. For a 4:1 mixture, there are 5 total parts. Divide the final container volume by the total number of parts to find the size of one part.
Example: 32 oz Bottle at 10:1
32 ÷ 11 = about 2.91 oz per part. Add about 2.91 oz of concentrate, then enough water to reach 32 oz total.
Example: 1 Gallon at 4:1
A U.S. gallon is 128 fl oz. 128 ÷ 5 = 25.6 oz. For a true 4:1 water-to-product final mixture, use 25.6 oz concentrate and 102.4 oz water.
Why "Add 1 Part Product to 10 Parts Water" Is Better Than Guessing
People sometimes treat 10:1 as though the concentrate should be one-tenth of the final container. That produces a different concentration. Total-parts math removes the ambiguity.
When a Label Uses Ounces per Gallon
Follow that instruction directly. "1 oz per gallon of water" is a dosing instruction, not necessarily the same thing as a final-solution ratio. Do not silently convert one convention into another.
Mixing Order
Follow the manufacturer's instructions. For products that foam aggressively, adding water first and concentrate afterward can reduce unwanted foaming during bottle filling, but product-specific directions take priority.
