Compound vs. Polish: What's the Difference?

Compound and polish both improve a finish by correcting defects, but they are not interchangeable labels. In a typical marine correction process, compound provides more cutting ability while polish is used for lighter correction or refinement.
What a Compound Is For
A compound is generally the more aggressive abrasive step. On gelcoat, it may be used for moderate or heavy oxidation, deeper haze, sanding marks or other defects that a finer polish cannot remove efficiently.
What a Polish Is For
A polish is generally finer. It can address lighter oxidation and haze, improve clarity, or refine a surface after compounding. Depending on the product, pad and condition, polishing may be the only correction step a lightly weathered boat needs.
Do You Always Need Two Steps?
No. Some surfaces can be corrected in one step. Some need compound and polish. Some only need polish. The finish should decide the process rather than a fixed rule that every boat receives the same sequence.
The Pad Changes the Equation
Cut is produced by the whole system: abrasive, pad, machine, speed, pressure, working time and technique. A correction liquid paired with a different pad can behave very differently.

Why Starting Too Aggressive Costs You
Every abrasive correction removes some material. If a polish and appropriate pad can achieve the result, using a heavy compound first adds work and removes more surface than necessary.
Start with the finish in front of you, not the label on the most aggressive bottle in the cabinet.
